Mission, Vision and Goals

The Centre for the Study of Animal Science/Centro de Estudos de Ciência Animal (CECA) is a FCT UID211 Unit, which integrates the ICETA, University of Porto. Its ultimate objective is to protect public health, by developing activities aiming the integration of Human Medicine and Veterinary Medicine according to the One Health Initiative. The general objectives of CECA supported research are to advance our understanding of biological systems, improve the diagnosis and control of animal diseases, including zoonosis, as well as developing knowledge-based animal system of production, taking into consideration the society concerns, opinions and preferences. How CECA’s research teams accomplishes these objectives? Recognizing that human and animal health are inextricably linked, CECA scientific teams, seek to promote, improve and defend the health and well-being of all species by enhancing cooperation and collaboration between physicians, veterinarians, molecular biologists, microbiologists and other scientific health professionals. Activities related to bovine neosporosis, a reproductive disease; salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis, as zoonotic diseases; nerve, vascular, muscle and bone regeneration, associating innovate biomaterials to autologous / allogenic stem cells; cancer associated with helminths infections, or metabolic diseases beneficiate of specific domains of expertise in Microbiology, Immunology, Chemistry, Genetics, Pathology, Oncology, Gene Cloning & Expression of CECA’ researchers allocated into 4 Research Groups: Biotechnology in Animal Science; Regenerative Medicine and Experimental Surgery; Emergent and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases and Inherited Metabolic Diseases in Animals
